Finlay Donavan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimand
We try to ensure we appeal to a wide variety of readers and that has made us both read books we would never have chosen before. A lovely follower wrote to us last week asking for a lighter recommendation that amidst the deluge of frightening news would bring a mental distraction. If this is also how you are feeling, the new title in the Finlay Donavan series, published last month, may be just what you need.
Already a US bestseller, following events straight after the end of the first book, Finlay Donavan is Killing It, this is the literary equivalent to watching an easy romantic crime comedy in a cosy pyjama night in with friends.
Our main character is a single mum, struggling to writer her next crime novel. Having been mistaken for a contract killer in the last book her ex husband is now the target and Finlay, already caught in a love triangle races to uncover the truth and protect her family.
I found there to be some laugh out loud moments and I cannot deny racing through the pages. There were definitely plot points I found unrealistic but who hasn’t felt that in many of the huge Hollywood films in the same category? This isn’t a serious, literary, deep dive into characters psyche and I really enjoyed that about it.
Undeniably, there is a very broad group of readers this would appeal to as a blend of genres. This is tamer than many romances, with hints of tension and passion. As a stand alone title you could understand what was going on but really Book 1 is important for much of the background so I would recommend starting there.
It’s the type of book I would love to read by a pool. It stopped me scrolling through the news for a few hours, bringing levity and comedy to my day. Would definitely watch any screen adaptation and read the next book as I have predictions!!
