Mythos by Stephen Fry

Looking back on that time when we lived through the height of lockdown makes me shudder. I remember, clearly, the feeling of just not quite knowing what to do with myself. Between homeschooling and work there wasn’t all that much time and space but somewhere, somehow, I picked up Mythos by the inimitable @stephenfryactually and oh my days, it brought me so much unbridled joy.

First and foremost, it got my brain into gear. I’d always wanted to learn more about the Greek myths and hadn’t really known where to start — if you’re in the same boat, Mythos is absolutely the place. Secondly, as well as learning a hell of a lot, it is, in parts, wet-yourself-funny. Fry brings such colour, wit, banter and humour to mythology, you’ll be left craving more. Honestly, his footnotes in this are some of the best I’ve ever read, trust me. And then of course there’s the fact that you can’t help but hear Stephen himself as you read, as if he’s reading to you and obviously that’s a mega bonus in and of itself.

Brilliant on every level, Mythos will educate you, enchant you and make you laugh a lot. Quite frankly, the ingredients for a perfect read. I adored it (so much so, in fact, that it’s in my Books That I Don’t Lend pile — anyone else got one?!) ~ S
