‘She Said’ by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey & ‘Gallant’ by V.E. Schawb
NON-FICTION & FANTASY
It’s a double review kind of morning folks because I recently consumed these two very different books and need to talk about them immediately.
She Said – I honestly don’t think I breathed whilst racing through this in one sitting. Bestselling non-fiction that reads like a thriller, by the two Pulitzer Prize winning, female investigative journalists this is the no holds barred, full account of how they uncovered Harvey Weinstein’s criminality and persuaded his victims to come forward, risking everything. They depict the corporate obfuscation and legal might they were up against & it is nothing short of astonishing that they succeeded.
This is so much more though than the dismantling of one corporation and man, this book lifts the veil concealing the fetters of non disclosure agreements, the corruption of politics and power, the desperation of achieving fame and the gender disparity in Hollywood. It changed my entire view on people I have read about for years, the lawyers that should hang their heads in shame. The film adaptation is out this year & I can’t wait. I had to buy this book and I cannot overstate how highly I recommend it.
Gallant – Published last month & entering bestseller lists instantly, this is the newest gothic fantasy from beloved author @veschwab (of recent Addie Larue fame). Olivia is non-verbal & living in a home for girls before being summonsed to her long lost uncles haunted estate. Beyond its borders lies an ancient and magical realm calling to her. Think The Secret Garden meets Guillermo Del Toro.
Initially I wasn’t completely immersed, however once the brooding atmosphere built, with more vivid detail given about Olivia and her surroundings, I was much more captivated and couldn’t put it down. Schwab is a master at building mist out of words & I am still thinking about it days later ~ Chaya
