“My book recommendation is Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. A lot of people are intimidated by Woolf’s stream of consciousness style, but for me what her books really boil down to are pure emotion. The bustle of London, the middle aged Clarissa Dalloway floating among her memories and planning a party, the shattered psyche of shell-shocked Septimus Warren-Smith are all vehicles for the mellifluous sort of magic that Woolf creates, weaving together a single day from multiple lives.

It’s the sort of book that makes you shockingly aware of the beauty in the mundane, the simple emotions that tinge every action and, in the end, the complexities of feeling and the human heart. It’s not just a story, it’s a day written with such intricacy and insight that you forget that none of these people are real and instead become one of them, but omniscient, floating above their lives, thoughts and memories like a spectre.

I first read Mrs Dalloway when I was fourteen, and in my hundreds of rereads since I’ve always found something new that speaks to me. It’s truly a novel that grows with you”.
