A COURT OF SILVER FLAMES

The ultimate #bookstagram made me read this offering on our page so far. I reviewed books 1-4 at the beginning of August and have waited a few weeks to collect my thoughts. This is a concoction of Outlander, Game of Thrones and Buffy with some VERY steamy scenes thrown in.

The reviews veer wildly from (a majority of) utter adoration to vehement hatred. The polarisation of opinion has kept the momentum around its release going for some months. If you have read this, comment or message us as I would love to know what you thought!

This book gave me a major reading hangover. I get the hype and I was SO ready to dismiss it though I was not anticipating how explicit it became. In my view this series gets better progressively every book and A Court of Silver Flames was pure escapism. A weighty 700+ pages of surprising complexity and multi layered characters, it wasn’t a chore to read and I sped through it.

I appreciated the change of perspective – this story arc centres on Nesta, who hasn’t featured as prominently previously and is herself a character that divides the crowd. I particularly loved the exploration of women finding their confidence after severe trauma which gave this a depth I wasn’t expecting.

This isn’t a book propelled by a clever plot, nor does it have many academic elements that elevate this like some of my other favourites in this genre namely the All Souls Trilogy. As it is so raunchy it cannot possibly be marketed as teen/young adult so I think it is a departure from its predecessors in that respect.

I cannot deny my enjoyment both in reading and considering the myriad opinions post consumption.
