A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving
FAVOURITE BOOK
We tend to talk about our favourite books on Fridays but today I’m going to talk about my actual favourite physical book on my shelves. Because, yes, I’ve featured this title before but not this specific copy — my most precious of them all — my first edition of A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
This book was given to me by the team @wmcollinsbookswhere I used to work back in the day. It was a job I loved and I always look back on with real fondness — this gift just shows how well the team knew me. I think I banged on about this book most days and it was the perfect leaving gift.
When I think back on all the books I’ve read — no easy feat, let’s be honest — there are so many I’ve adored for so many *many* reasons. But this one has always, in some strange way, been *the one*. It haunts me, still, so many years later and when I think of Owen, perhaps one of the most original characters in modern literature, I truly believe that still, I know him and that he is okay, wherever he may be.
Needless to say, if you haven’t read this, you damn well should. Happy Friday folks, have a wonderful one ~ S
