Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert

Self-help books strike me as a bit ‘Marmite’ — you either love them or hate them. I used to avoid them like the plague (or like Covid, perhaps) but, since giving them more of a try, I’ve found more and more that I find myself referring back to, again and again.
Big Magic is one that I finished recently and really enjoyed. Elizabeth Gilbert’s writing is so accessible and though this felt quite American in tone (read: much more positive than my somewhat negative British outlook), it conveyed the workings of the creative process in a very interesting and quite frankly, inspiring way.
This book is also about the importance of creativity in life, in whatever form that may take for you. I found Gilbert’s words on persistence and perfection hugely insightful and they are chapters that I will continue to return to. I can honestly say that this book has given me so much to think about in terms of my own creativity and I am thankful to bookstagram as it’s one that I didn’t know about until it popped up on my feed. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did — and I know I will continue to dip in and out of it for a long time to come.
