The Priory Of The Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

For any fans of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, or epic fantasies in general – if you haven’t read The Priory of The Orange Tree I highly recommend you consider it to satiate your fantasy needs.

This is a long book but I found myself savouring each and every page by the end. The story is a sophisticated blend of mythology, politics, religion, action and magic with questions of morality that elevate the tone. Three empires that have starkly conflicting beliefs and rituals face a fight for survival and refreshingly the destiny of the world is in the hands of three women.

Beyond the fact that in this world, differences of gender, race and sexual orientation are immaterial, I found the different perceptions of dragons and exploration of religious fervour and distortion of canonical beliefs for political use to be really thought provoking.

Shannon’s strengths are her graphic world-building and seamlessly layering an understanding of the complex history she has created without the pages feeling too laden down with description. She crafts a long cast of characters without the main protagonists getting lost and the intersecting storylines do draw together elegantly. I am now waiting impatiently for a sequel as I don’t want to leave these characters behind.
