I Dissent by Debbie Levy

With five children between us aged from seven and a half to two (today!), we will be featuring a selection of kids books each month, too. This beautifully illustrated book about Ruth Bader Ginsburg feels like an appropriate first pick and is a firm favourite in our house; my seven year old loves reading it to my five year old so it actually gets me out of storytelling on some evenings — thank you RBG (and thanks @gould.dave for a great Chanukah present).

Ruth’s story is so important for all children to hear in helping them to understand that they can achieve anything, regardless of gender. This beautifully illustrated book captures the essence of Ruth’s marriage to Marty, a highly successful lawyer himself, who ranked her career as equal to his own — and was fully in charge of cooking for the family, which he loved doing.

What we love about books like this is that they convey key messaging and current affairs in a way that children can understand and absorb, hopefully instilling them with the confidence to start their own conversations ~ Sophie
